OBS overlays and Overlay Studio
Put your Vespene data on stream. One personal URL drives the post-match recap and a family of widgets (session stats, performance graph, live match scorebug, chat), and Overlay Studio customizes all of it.
Everything on-stream runs off one personal overlay URL added to OBS as a browser source. The URL carries a private token, so guard it like a password and regenerate it if it ever leaks (regenerating invalidates the old one everywhere).
Getting your URL#
Open the Command Console's Broadcast tab (F10 in the Companion or the logo at the top left, then Broadcast; /#/console/broadcast opens it directly) and, under Setup, create your stream key: OBS sources lists one row per widget with the link, Copy, and a tokenless sample-data Preview you can position against (&demo=1). Add each in OBS as a 1920x1080 Browser source. The same list is on the Broadcast Control Panel at /overlay/control.
The post-match recap#
The headline overlay: after each of your ladder games, a full-screen recap pops with the result, your report card and sub-grades, the opening build, a coach's note, and then a replay theater that plays the game back before sliding out. It stays quiet between games. With the Companion running it also clears the instant your next game starts, so it never sits on top of a live game.
It needs the desktop Companion, because the Companion's auto-upload is what tells the site your game just ended. A game that uploads late (outside the freshness window, 30 minutes by default) is absorbed silently instead of popping a stale recap an hour later.
The widget family#
The same token drives smaller always-on widgets; each is its own browser source URL:
- Session stats: a compact rotating card with your scoreline, per-map records, and win rate per race, sized to whatever you make the source.
- Performance graph: your ladder trend over 48 hours to 28 days, the same chart the study desk's Form view draws. Pin a view with URL parameters or let the control panel drive it.
- Live match bar: the scorebug. Names, real ladder MMR, and your head-to-head with this opponent, shown only during games and cleared at the end. A rating that cannot be sourced shows no chip rather than a made-up number.
- Stream chat: your Twitch chat rendered as an on-stream column, with font, badge, emote, and fade controls.
- Tournament widgets (results panel, standings, match spotlight, replay theater) render when a caster scene calls for them; see Caster tools and tournament scenes.
Every widget has a tokenless demo twin (?demo=1) for layout work.
Overlay Studio#
Overlay Studio is the customization surface, and it lives under Looks on the Command Console's Broadcast tab (/#/overlay-studio still opens it on its own). It is canvas-first: the live preview fills the editor, and the drawer under it shows the controls for the one thing you have selected: a screen, a module you clicked on the recap, or a widget on the caster editor. Everything that applies to every screen or widget (theme, replay playback, the OBS source's behaviour) is behind the Look button. Three profiles, one per overlay:
- Post-match recap: what OBS plays after each game, as your stream shows it.
- In-app recap: the same recap as the takeover inside Vespene and the Companion shows it. It inherits your post-match profile until you save it separately.
- Caster widgets: the caster scene overlay (theme accent, results panel geometry, scorebug and session-card styling, chat styling).
Inside a profile you toggle and reorder the recap's modules per screen (result word, player cards, sub-grades, win probability, build orders, biggest fights, and a few dozen more). Since the config v3 defaults, the out-of-the-box show is deliberately lean: RESULT for fifteen seconds, then the REPLAY screen, done. The breakdown, coach, detail, and benchmark screens are one toggle away each if you want the longer show. "Ask the coach" is off by default in OBS (nobody can type into a browser source); a Studio switch can put it on stream if you want it there.
Saves publish live; the running overlay picks changes up within a few seconds. ⟲ Reset returns a surface to defaults.
Security notes worth knowing#
- The overlay token is read-only. It can render your overlays and nothing else; it cannot change settings, and it is deliberately powerless on every admin surface.
- Rotating the token (generating again) is the fix for a leaked URL, and it breaks the old URL in OBS immediately, so re-paste it after rotating.
- The auto-hide presence signal comes from the Companion. If the Companion crashes, the system fails open after three minutes: your overlay comes back rather than staying stuck hidden.
